Mastram is a Hindi adult drama web series that arrived during the first wave of India’s OTT boom in 2020. Set largely against a 1980s backdrop, the show follows an aspiring writer who discovers that the kind of stories he wants to write are very different from what publishers believe readers want.
Anshuman Jha plays the central character Rajaram, while Tara Alisha Berry appears as Madhu. The series combines Rajaram’s personal life with his growing success as the anonymous writer “Mastram.” It premiered on MX Player on April 30, 2020, with 10 episodes released as part of its first season.

Mastram Web Series Cast
Anshuman Jha as Rajaram/Mastram
Anshuman Jha leads the series as Rajaram, an aspiring writer trying to establish himself professionally. After his conventional writing fails to attract publishers, he adopts the name Mastram and begins writing adult fiction. His double life becomes the central thread connecting the episodes.
Tara Alisha Berry as Madhu
Tara Alisha Berry plays Madhu, Rajaram’s romantic interest. His relationship with Madhu gives the story its personal conflict because Rajaram is reluctant to reveal that he is the man behind the increasingly famous Mastram identity.
Berry also appeared in the earlier 2014 Hindi film Mastram, although the film and the 2020 web series have separate story versions and character setups.
Aakash Dabhade as Gopal
Aakash Dabhade plays Gopal, one of Rajaram’s close associates. His character appears through much of the season and becomes part of Rajaram’s everyday life outside his secret writing career.
Jagat Singh Rawat as Mamaji
Jagat Singh Rawat appears as Rajaram’s maternal uncle. Mamaji contributes to the lighter and sometimes troublesome situations surrounding Rajaram and his relationship with Madhu.
Rani Chatterjee as Rani
Bhojpuri actress Rani Chatterjee plays Rani, one of the important characters whose interaction with Rajaram becomes an inspiration for his writing.
Other notable cast members include:
- Kenisha Awasthi as Miss Rita
- Aabha Paul as Sarita Nair
- Garima Jain as actress Indurekha
- Isha Chhabra as Madhu’s Bua
- Ashmita Jaggi as Inspector Gayatri “Geetu”
- Nehal Vadoliya as Nanda
- Vipin Sharma as Durga Prasad
- Ravi Sharma as Vishambar, Madhu’s father
- Amrita Das Gupta as Chhoti Bahu
- Kamalika Chanda as Secretary
- Harshita Kushwaha as Asha
IMDb lists Anshuman Jha and Tara Alisha Berry across all 10 episodes, while Jagat Rawat, Aakash Dabhade and several supporting performers appear repeatedly through the season.
Mastram Web Series Crew
The series was created under Almighty Motion Picture and originally released through MX Player. Contemporary coverage published before its premiere credited Akhilesh Jaiswal as director. This credit is worth distinguishing from unreliable listings that sometimes combine details from the earlier Mastram film with the web series.
Important crew credits include:
- Director: Akhilesh Jaiswal
- Writer: Aryan Sunil
- Producer: Prabhleen Sandhu
- Executive Producers: Ravi Bohra and Kunal Rohra
- Supervising Producer: Himani Chauhan

- Casting Director: Raj Kamal
- Production Designer: Neeraj Singh
- Costume Designer: Saachi Vijaywargia

IMDb’s production records confirm Aryan Sunil as the writer for the 10 episodes and list Prabhleen Sandhu as producer, along with the principal technical crew.
Mastram Web Series Story
The story takes place in the 1980s and centres on Rajaram, a young man determined to become a successful writer. He wants recognition for serious writing, but his work fails to impress publishers.
Rajaram gradually realises that sensational adult stories have a much larger commercial audience. Drawing ideas from people he meets, memories from his past and incidents around him, he begins creating fictional adult stories.
Instead of publishing them under his real name, Rajaram chooses the pseudonym Mastram.
The decision changes his fortunes. Mastram’s stories begin attracting readers, and Rajaram finally achieves the commercial success that had previously escaped him. The problem is that his growing public identity exists separately from his real life.
At the same time, Rajaram develops a relationship with Madhu and plans a future with her. He therefore has to manage two very different identities: the ordinary man Madhu knows and the controversial writer whose work is becoming increasingly popular.
Each episode introduces situations or characters that feed Rajaram’s imagination while continuing the larger story of his career, relationship and secret identity. The season ultimately moves towards Madhu discovering the truth about Mastram.
How Many Episodes Are There in Mastram?
Mastram has one season consisting of 10 episodes. All 10 episodes were originally released on April 30, 2020.
The episodes include titles such as Khali Bus Ka Suhana Safar, Master Ji Ka Danda, Mallu Aunty Ka Malmal, Baniye Ka Lollypop, Bua Ke 56 Aasan, Vaibhav Ki Didi, Abhineteri Ka Nirman, Madhu Ki Do Saheliyan, Sonu Ka Joban and the season finale. Aryan Sunil is credited as writer across the season.
Mastram OTT Platform and Streaming Details
Mastram originally premiered on MX Player on April 30, 2020. The series was later removed from the service. Producer Prabhleen Sandhu said in a June 2026 interview that it had been taken down because of censorship concerns surrounding its erotic content.
The streaming rights later moved to ULLU, which began promoting Mastram on its official channels in 2023. IMDb also records that ULLU acquired the rights after the show’s removal from MX Player.
OTT availability can change with licensing agreements. As of September 2026, JustWatch’s India listing shows Mastram available through Vi Movies & TV. Viewers should therefore check the current listing on their preferred streaming service before subscribing specifically for the show.
Why Mastram Became a Noticed OTT Release
Mastram arrived at a time when Indian streaming platforms were rapidly experimenting with subjects and formats that conventional television generally avoided. Its adult theme attracted attention, but the continuing story of Rajaram also gave the series a narrative beyond its episodic material.
Anshuman Jha’s Rajaram remains the connecting point throughout the season: a struggling writer who discovers commercial success but must deal with the complications created by the very identity that makes him successful.
With its period setting, 10-episode structure and mix of drama, humour, romance and mature content, Mastram became one of the more widely discussed Hindi streaming releases from the 2020 lockdown period.
